As a child and adult psychologist, Dr Cotler specializes in reproductive and maternal mental health as well as parent-child attachment. With her unique training, she brings a mindfulness to her integrative approach and helps identify your origin story so that you can be present in your relationship today without the pain of the past clouding the present.
It can be a pivotal and powerful experience to truly see the child in front of us. In being present, you can help put words to your child’s emotions, validate their feelings, establish trust, and show them that you’ll consistently be there for them. Once they feel seen and heard, they’ll know you carry their mind in your mind. This gives permission to your child to move through whatever it is they are feeling in a safe way.
Dr. Cotler received her Masters and PhD in Clinical Psychology from Adelphi University, Derner Institute for Psychological Studies where the focus of her research was in the areas of attachment science, mentalization, and emotion regulation.
Dr. Cotler has a post-doctoral certification in Parent Infant Psychotherapy from Columbia University, NY and nearly two decades of experience in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based practices and Psychodynamic Orientated Psychotherapy and trauma informed therapies.
As an insight-oriented, psychodynamically trained relational therapist, Dr Cotler recently co-founded RENNI, an integrative mental health clinic located in Toronto, Ontario.
With nearly two decades of researching and working clinically with across the developmental spectrum of child to adult as well as working with a broad range of mental health challenges including anxiety, depression, relationship issues, trauma, loss, and bereavement. Her expertise in working with maternal reproduction mental health sees a journey from conception, changes in pregnancy, adoption, miscarriage, loss, and early childhood and parent attachment.

“After hearing Dr. Tanya Cotler speak about maternal mental health at an event in February of 2021, I knew she would be the perfect guest for The Mom Room Podcast. Dr. Cotler’s episode on attachment science is one of the most downloaded episodes to date. She beautifully explains scientific theory while using real-life experiences that all mothers can relate to. Dr. Cotler is extremely knowledgeable, compassionate, and easy to talk to. I consider myself lucky to be able to call Dr. Cotler a friend and I can’t wait to have her on the podcast again.” “

“When I created my Sleep Consultant Certification Program, I couldn’t think of anyone better to speak to my students than Dr Tanya Cotler. Dr Cotler has been a guest on my podcast, The Slumber Party Podcast and has a wonderful, easy and accessible way of discussing the complicated world of infant/ child attachment. Her very real and down-to-earth persona and way with the students make her a favourite of the entire course (according to our feedback forms!) and a guest I’m too happy to invite back every session. I cannot think of anyone better for my brand or my students.”

Through my work as a reporter and the founder of my own online motherhood platform, I work with many experts in the field of perinatal mental health. Finding people who you can return to time and time again is difficult. Tanya is a true unicorn; she is just as brilliant and knowledgeable as a subject matter expert as she is compassionate and caring in the treatment she provides and the space she holds for new parents. She is a joy to work with.
